Beauty Bloggerati Spotlight: MacGyver-ish Beauty Tips

Last week, as I removed pills from a sweater using a Schick Quattro razor, I started thinking about alternate uses for everyday beauty products. So I called on my fellow Beauty Bloggerati to share their MacGyver-ish beauty tips. Enjoy!

In a pinch, Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion works as an eye makeup remover. It even takes off mascara. -Karen, Makeup and Beauty Blog

I use a dry toothbrush to exfoliate snaggy, dry lips. -Amber, Beauty Blogging Junkie

I sometimes use my hair conditioner as a shaving-cream stand-in. A rich conditioner can moisturize and protect skin as well as your favorite shaving cream in a pinch, like when traveling! -Tammy, A Mom In Red High Heels

To keep my cuticles looking great when I don't have my favorite Solar Oil on hand, I use Chapstick or lip balm to moisturize them. -Erika, Makeup Bag

Gauze pads work better than cotton balls (or rounds) to remove polish. The textured surface grabs polish so it slides right off and you won't be left picking off cotton ball fibers! -Erika, Makeup Bag

A black Sharpie is the best quick fix for random gray hairs that seem to come out of nowhere! -Erika, Makeup Bag

For those days when I get really drastic breakouts I soak cotton rounds in warm water and then dip them in baking soda. I then lay the pads flat on my ace for about 10 min. The effect of the baking soda brings all of the zitty yuckiness to the surface and then I take sterile lance and pop the zit. Its a safe way to get rid of pimples on your face and it doesn't leave any scarring. -Lisa, These Lips Are Made For Glossin'

I'll do the old lipstick as blush trick - usually when I notice I'm looking deathly pale and I'm out running around to meetings/errands. I don't usually carry blush in my purse, but I always have lipstick or gloss. I dab a bit on the apples of my cheeks and blend. - Anne, The Jet Set Girls

I love to create my own tinted moisturizer by mixing a pinch of mineral foundation, a drop of makeup primer, and a dime size amount of heavy-duty sunscreen. Perfect for days outside! -Bailey, Makeover Momma

When I really need to blot my skin, I grab a piece of a toilet seat cover from the nearest bathroom (or sometimes tissue paper from a present), and use that to soak up any oil. -Bailey, Makeover Momma

I love applying a bit of shimmer cream lotion to my legs and arms to highlight my skin, but it can also be perfect to highlight your brow bone, cheekbones and even lips in a pinch. I also smooth the residue over the ends of my hair, because it tames flyways, makes hair smooth and gives it a sneaky dose of shine. -Bailey, Makeover Momma

I use Vaseline on my feet before bed. I like to slather it on my heels and then put some really thick socks on. It works better than most foot creams I've tried...and I've tried a lot! -Carla, Product Girl

I take the mascara a step further and use one closer to my brow color. It beefs up sparse brows, covers grays if you have them, and keeps them in line. The only caution is to use a waterproof. You don't want to be caught in the rain and have your brows wash off! -Jen, Beyond Beauty Basics

L'Occitane's shea butter hand cream, cuticle cream, conditioner on ends of hair, tame flyaway hair when dry. -Hope, The Jet Set Girls

Allure Magazine: If I Could Turn Back Time

The October 2009 issue of Allure has a very interesting article about our own ability to turn back the clock. The story focuses on a study of 186 identical twins, and how lifestyle choices (weight, alcohol, marital status, smoking, sun exposure) can cause two people with the same DNA to look dramatically different.

Did you know that the longer a woman takes birth control pills or hormone-replacement therapy, and the higher the dose, the more likely she is to look younger? Or that taking antidepressants is generally associated with an older appearance?

The article, Living Young, is on page 228 and the issue is on newsstands right now.

Once You Go MAC Style Black, You Never Go Back

Haven't you heard? Black is the new black.

For the past six months, I was anxiously counting down the days until September 24th. Not because it was my birthday, but because I had insider information that MAC was re-releasing its Volcanic Ash Exfoliator as part of the Style Black Collection. If you're a Spoiled Pretty regular, you've probably heard me mention it once or twice...or, possibly, a million times. That's how much I adore this scrub.

I’ve tested an excessive amount of exfoliants, so it takes a serious scrub to even get my attention...and the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is, hands down, the best EVER. Yes, I said ever - as in since primordial soup 'til today.

Originally released as part of MAC's Future Earth collection last summer, it became a cult classic. Those who missed out were singing the shoulda woulda coulda's. And those who got a taste were wishing they could jump in a DeLorean, rev up the Flux Capacitor and go back to June 2008 and snag a lifetime supply. I fell into the second category, rationing my Volcanic Ash Exfoliator like it was a bag of beans on a season of Survivor.

Now that MAC has answered my prayers (and even packaged it in a convenient tube), I've stocked up and I suggest you do the same. It's already sold out on maccosmetics.com, so I suggest you do your best Sherlock Holmes impression and sleuth that sh*t out (hint: Macys.com and Nordstrom.com still have it in stock).

And don't just buy one lonely tube. Ah, naw. by the time you buy one, try it, and realize you can't live without it, exfoliating fools will have wiped out the supply. So just trust me on this one, act like you're at Costco, and buy in bulk.

The Style Black collection also includes these other gems:

Volcanic Ash Thermal Mask, $19.50
Formulated with volcanic ash and natural oils, this ash-black facial mask simultaneously deep-cleanses and treats the skin. When water is added, the mask heats up and the oils instantly lubricate the skin, leaving it feeling soft and clean. Helps keep skin moist, clean, soft and evenly textured.

Mineralize Eye Shadow, $19.50
Cinderfella: Mineralize black with silver pearl (frost)
Gilt By Association: Mineralize black with gold bronze pearl (frost)
Blue Flame: Mineralize black with blue pearl (frost)
Young Punk: Mineralize black with pinkish purple pearl (frost)

Cream Colour Base, $16.50
Black: Creamy true black
Bat Black:
Blackened burgundy with pink pearl

Penultimate Eye Liner, $16.50
Rapidblack: True black

Greasepaint Stick, $17.50
Intense black

Eye Kohl, $14.50
Smolder: Intense black

Cremesheen Lipstick, $14
Black Knight: Creamy true black

Mattene Lipstick, $14.50
Night Violet: Deep purple grape
Midnight Media: Dense matte black

Glimmerglass Lip Gloss, $18
Bling Black: Sheer black with gold pearl (as seen at NYFW Fall 2009)
Blackfire: Sheer black with pinkish purple pearl
Blackware: Creamy true black

Nail Lacquer, $12
Seriously Hip: Black with gold particle pearl
Baby Goth Girl: Black with pinkish purple pearl
Nocturnelle: Black as night black

214 Short Shader Brush, $23

The Style Black collection is now available at MAC counters, stores and maccosmetics.com.

Do You Smell What The Karan Is Cooking?

Don't you just love when you jump on a bandwagon just at the right moment? Like when you read a book right before the movie comes out...or you get behind a team right before they win the Super Bowl...or when you embrace a hot new trend just as it becomes available at Forever 21? Score! That's how I feel about Donna Karan Cashmere Mist.

Cashmere Mist has been around since 1985, but I just discovered (and was seduced by) it this summer - when I picked up the Mini Deodorant/Antierspirant at Sephora. After using the deodorant for about a week, I found it impossible to live without the perfume. And I'm not alone - millions of women have also fallen under its spell; Cashmere Mist just happens to be the number four best-selling fragrance in the United States.

A few weeks after wearing the perfume religiously, I felt compelled to expand my personal Cashmere Mist collection, and I am now the proud owner of the Body Lotion, Shampoo and Conditioner.

This fall, Donna Karan celebrates the fragrance's 15th birthday and gives me yet another reason to praise my perfect timing: Cashmere Mist Luxe Edition Eau de Parfum, a modern, enhanced version of the original. "Cashmere Mist is the ultimate Modern Icon," Karan says. "For 15 years, it has been a worldwide passion - a soft, sensual indulgence for women to wrap themselves in year round. Cashmere Mist Luxe Edition adds a whole new level of luxury. It is my thank you to women for making Cashmere Mist what it is today."

Cashmere Mist Luxe Edition Eau de Parfum features heightened notes of Watery Elements and Bergamot, mingled with two Jasmine absolutes, Orange Flower, Ylang and Muget, enveloped by the creaminess of Moss, Blonde woods, Amber, Labdanum and Vanilla. Simply put, it's a saucier and more decadent version of the cult classic; wear the original during the day and spritz on the Luxe Edition for a night out, when you want to turn up the heat and turn on the charm.

The Cashmere Mist Luxe Edition collection consists of a 1 oz Eau de Parfum Spray ($48.00) and a 1.7 oz Eau de Parfum Spray ($70.00). It is available in Donna Karan stores, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Sephora.

Birthday Cat Eye

I have been told my many a professional that my eyes were made for makeup. Not to sound cocky or anything, but I'm pretty sure that when God formed me in the womb, s/he said to her/himself, "Wow...when this girl grows up, she's gonna rock a fierce cat eye."

So to celebrate my third annual 29th birthday, Mr. Spoiled Pretty and I dined at Tinto, one of my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia - and I sported this ferosh feline eye.

Here's the recipe to replicate the look:

Apply Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion to entire eye, lashline up to brow bone.

Using MAC 242 Shader Brush, apply Stila Kitten Smudge Pot on the lid - from lashline to crease.

Using MAC 217 Blending Brush, lightly apply Stila Kitten Eye Shadow to the lid - from lashline to brow bone.

Using MAC 266 Small Angle Brush, line the eye with Stila Black Smudge Pot, flicking at the edge.

Prime lashes with Lancome Oscillation Powerbooster. Before it dries, layer Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara on top.

Finally, dip MAC 210 Precise Eye Liner Brush into Stila Kitten Eye Shadow and apply to inner corner of the eye, in a sideways V.

And here's a bonus - thanks to the products' staying power, your eye makeup will have nine lives. Meow!

Spoiled Pretty Exclusive: Kim Kardashian Fashion Week Hairstyles How-To

Last week while in New York City for Fashion Week, I ran into celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic in Bryant Park. Sweetie that he is, Mario introduced me to the man responsible for Kim Kardashian's fierce Fashion Week hairstyles.

Lucky for you, I had my Flipcam (along with 10,000 of my other worldy possessions) in my purse - so I conducted an impromptu interview. Watch as Rolando Beauchamp shares how to steal Lil Kimmy's (my new nickname for her) Fashion Week hairstyles. Enjoy!

A Little Off The Top...And Bottom

A few weeks ago, Mr. Spoiled Pretty shared a particularly hilarious anecdote from his childhood growing up in Cheney, Washington.

Between the ages of 10 and 12, Graham would travel to downtown Cheney to get his hair cut by a man known as 'Shorty.' Shorty charged $3.50 (not $3 or $4) for his signature cut - the flat top. By signature, I mean that the flat top is the only style he knew how to perform. Thanks to his bargain basement prices, Shorty earned a steady clientele of local farmers and young boys.

One detail of Graham's story that intrigued me (besides the crazy $3.50 flat top price tag) was the fact that Shorty's barber shop stocked an extensive selection of Playboy magazines. Which got me thinking...

If I were a guy waiting to get my hair cut, wouldn't I feel weird flipping through a Playboy in public? The answer is a resounding "yes." But, apparently, Playboy magazines in men's barber shops are fairly common.

Despite Mr. Spoiled Pretty's insistence that there are articles in Playboy that men actually read, the phenomenon of men casually perusing Playboy in broad daylight - in a place of business - still strikes me as pervy.

Thoughts?

Urban Decay Ink For Eyes: $9 Cheaper at Macys.com

It's funny what you find when you're aimlessly surfing the Internet. For example, unless someone told you, you'd probably never know that Urban Decay's Ink For Eyes cream eyeliner is only $13.50 at Macys.com.

Everywhere else, you're paying $22. Don't know why that is. But you know what they say about looking a gift horse in the mouth...

Pastis: Breakfast of Beauty Champions

Last week while in town for New York Fashion Week, I shared a delish breakfast with beauty friends Amber, Nancy and my mane man, Jason Backe.

You might remember Jason from a post earlier this year, when the two of us hung out watching the Grammys - and he up and decided to dye my hair.

Jason is one of the most sought after colorists in New York, where he co-owns the Ted Gibson Salon. His list of celebrity clients (Anne Hathaway, Renée Zellweger, Amerie, Idina Menzel, Eltra Rossalini, and Lake Bell) reads like an issue of Us Magazine.

As if it's even possible, Jason's schedule book is about to get even more, well, booked. In the October 2009 issue of Allure Magazine, he was named "the best of the best." If you're in or passing through the NYC area, do yourself a favor and make an appointment. Get in where you fit in. Jason's worth the wait.

Check out Jason's blog on Daily Makeover and follow my mane man on Twitter.

Recessionista's Fabuless Pick of the Week, Plus a Giveaway!

Last Monday morning, while in NYC for Fashion Week, I got ready and rushed out of my hotel room - forgetting to apply lotion. Quelle horreur, right? Honestly, that doesn't even begin to cover it because I was on my way to an event sponsored by Vaseline. I mean, how you gonna show up for a Vaseline event with ashy arms?

When I arrived at the event and spied my scaly skin, I was beyond embarrassed. But my awkward situation actually presented a unique opportunity to put Vaseline's new Sheer Infusion with Stratys-3 lotions to the test.

I have to admit that when I squeezed a dollop of the silky formula into my open palm, I was immediately skeptical. I was all, "Child, please. Bring on the grease! If Vaseline believes that this thin lotion is going to quench my Sahara-dry dermis, I've got some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell 'em." But after smoothing Sheer Infusion on my my skin, I was shocked at how it instantly banished the ash - leaving it hydrated and silky smooth all day.

Though it works like magic, there is actually some hard core science behind Vaseline's newest breakthrough. Sheer Infusion delivers two times more moisture than leading everyday body lotions - thanks to Stratys-3, a multi-layer moisturizing complex that infuses and suspends moisture across multiple layers of the skin (the top, the core and deep down). The revolutionary patented technology of Stratys-3 enables Sheer Infusion to deliver these layers by combining three powerful ingredients: Glycerol Quat, Glycerin and Hydroxy Ethyl Urea.

Sheer Infusion with Stratys-3 is available in three variants:

* Botanical Blend: With botanical cypress extract and eucalyptus extract, this lotion is perfect for those looking for skin soothing benefits. It features a sap boost scent with hints of Fiji apple, Chinese mandarin, sun-drenched water lily, stephanotis flowers, Baltic amber and musk.

*Mineral Renewal (Spoiled Pretty fave!): This formula contains enriching minerals found in healthy skin for when your skin feels tired and depleted. It features a scent of crisp pear, fresh bergamot, white peony, apple blossom and a hint of ginger essence.

* Vitamin Boost: Featuring Vitamins B5 and E, this lotion is ideal for those whose skin needs a boost. The ferngully scent includes a blend of sparkling citrus, red current berries, pear, rhubarb, flowers and spices.

Vaseline Sheer Infusion with Stratys-3 is available now at food, drug and mass retailers nationwide in both 6.8 oz bottles ($6.25) and 13.5 oz pump bottles ($8.99). Click here for a coupon. But you can get your hydration on here...for FREE!

That's right, y'all. Three lucky winners will receive three bottles of each lotion (9 bottles in all)!

To enter the giveaway, send an email to spoiledprettycontests@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name and mailing address. The subject line should read "Vaseline Giveaway." The contest ends at midnight (EST) on Tuesday, September 29th. Three winners will be chosen at random from among the entrants. On Wednesday, September 30th, I'll announce the winners' names. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. residents.

Good luck!

Spoiled Pretty Exclusive: Kim Kardashian Emmy Beauty Breakdown!!!

By now, you know that I love me some Kim Kardashian makeup. So when celebrity makeup artist (and the biggest sweetheart who ever LIVED) Mario Dedivanovic offered me an exclusive beauty breakdown of her Emmys look, I pinched myself so hard, I swear it left a mark.

So without further ado, Mario shares the products and tips to steal Kim Kardashian's 2009 Emmy Awards makeup...

Kim was wearing a gorgeous white gown and I wanted the focus to be on her eyes. I had
custom blended this pretty shade of blue shadow at GIELLA custom blend cosmetics in NYC and was waiting for the perfect occasion to dip into it. With her hair slicked back and a white off the shoulder gown, I was certain that it would work with the rest of the face done clean and dewy, with a nude matte lip.

I prepped Kim’s skin with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer first, followed by Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup all over. To set skin, I applied a bit of Laura Mercier's Loose Setting Powder in Beige. Her brows are filled in with Diorshow Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil, concentrating on the outer corners.

For her eyes, I sprayed a bit of water on an eyeshadow brush (this picks up and holds loose eyeshadow better) and dipped it into Aquagirl eyeshadow by GIELLA - custom blended by yours truly ;-). I applied Aquagirl all over the eyelids up to the crease, blending well so there are no lines.

On the inner corners of the eyes, apply GIELLA's b-dazzle eyeshadow. Use the leftovers on the brush to lightly sweep onto the brow bone. You dont want the brow bone to appear very shiny or light as it will look dated. Smoke Aquagirl shadow along the lower lash line as well. For more drama, you can take it all the way into the inner corners. Use Fascinating Eye Kohl by MAC on the inner rims of the eyes. Curl lashes a couple of times and apply two coats of Lancome Hypnose Mascara on top and bottom lashes. If you want super long lashes like Kim, apply a few individual long lashes to each eye.

Kim's skin is bronzed with
Casino by NARS. Use a bit on a brush and apply it along the hairline. With a smaller brush, apply more onto the hollows of the cheeks. Use Orgasm by NARS on the apples of the cheeks. To highlight the cheekbones and bridge of nose, I swept a tiny bit of b-dazzle shadow by GIELLA and blended with a clean brush.

I lined Kim's lips with
Subculture by MAC, then blended a dab of the Dior foundation to her lips. Blot that with a tissue and use Honeylove Lipstick, also by MAC.

Giella, of GIELLA custom blend cosmetics has decided to make and sell Aquagirl eyeshadow and is offering a 15% discount!!! Click here and enter makeupbymario for the discount. b-dazzle eyeshadow, one of Mario’s all-time favorites, can also be purchased on the site with the same discount code!

Love Mario as much as I do? Be sure to visit his blog regularly...and follow him on Twitter!

Mwah, Mario!

Fall Beauty Trends Giveaway Winner Revealed!

A few weeks ago, I appeared on the NBC 10! Show to school you on fall's hottest beauty trends and the products you NEED to steal the looks. But I wasn't content just telling you about the products. Ah naw. I had to, at least, give one of you the opportunity to try the products. That's just how I do. And now the time has come to announce that lucky winner's name.

Congrats to Lizelle Abrams! Lizelle will receive:

Revlon Brow Specialist Kit: The set includes three brow stencils in varying degrees of arch to fit every shape, tweezers, a universally flattering brow pencil, and brow gel - all in a sleek carrying case.

Urban Decay Ink For Eyes Liner (all six shades!): More precise than a pencil and more forgiving than a liquid, this super-smooth formula offers more control, and buildable coverage than your average liner. The angled liner brush creates a razor sharp line, and the formula lasts all day (or night). Available in six gorgeous colors: Binge (midnight blue), Demolition (brown), Empire (eggplant), Loaded (deep green), Pyrotechnics (iridescent glitter with clear base), and Zero (black).

Goody Resort Glamour Kingston Bobby Slides: These are the next generation of bobby pins. They are some of the most darling bobby pins I've ever seen, and come in a selection of shades sure to match your personality, hair color and/or ensemble.

OPI Matte Collection (all six shades!): OPI recently released six of their best-selling shades in non-glossy formulation. The collection includes: Alpine Snow(a fresh crisp white), Gargantuan Green Grape (green kissed by the summer sun), La Paz-itively Hot (a hot pink perfect for when you’re Bo-livia la vida loca), Lincoln Park After Dark (where midnight meets purple), Russian Navy (wait until you see this deep-sea indigo!) and You Don’t Know Jacques! (if you don’t know how trendy this taupe is!).

Air kisses to Revlon, Urban Decay, Goody and OPI for hooking Lizelle up. And all of you not named Lizelle, keep your eyes peeled for your next chance to win some amazing beauty booty.
