Snake Massage? Sssssay What?!?

The other day, Mr. Spoiled Pretty was perusing msn.com when he happened upon an article entitled "Bizarre Ways to Beat Stress and Unwind: 10 lesser-known methods for dealing with a high-stress life." First up on the list: snake massage. Um, say what?!?!? I can't think of anything more stress inducing than having serpents slither all over me. I'd probably die of cardiac arrest before the whole thing was through.

But oddly enough, people actually pay for this kind of 'therapy.'

Strange: Some people like the feel of non-poisonous reptiles slithering across their bodies in spa-like settings, with larger, heavier snakes providing a deeper kneading as they crawl across flesh. But how effective are these creatures at reducing stress? Even snakes’ general pressure on the body can be relaxing, says Kriota Willberg, a licensed massage therapist and an instructor at Swedish Institute, in New York. But what’s missing is a snake’s ability to systematically and selectively apply pressure, and to respond to the body’s feedback.

But True: When a patient is stressed out, the neck, shoulders, lower back and lower extremities are often especially tense, says Willberg. Within these areas of tension, multiple layers of muscles are often involved. By incorporating different muscle-relaxing techniques, such as tempo, expertise at palpating, and varying the pressure—skills that are not part of a snake’s repertoire—massage therapists customize their work to patients’ needs. The result is a modality that’s both stress-reducing and therapeutic.

I don't care what anyone says - snake massage sounds like something they'd do to the contestants on Fear Factor, right before making them eat crocodile eyeballs. And paying for this wackadoo service? You gotsssssssssssssss to be a resident of crazytown to reach into your wallet for some nonsense like this. Someone would have to pay me a helluva lot more than $70 for six snakes to have a playdate on my semi-clothed body.

Visit msn.com for more bizarre stress relievers, including jaw massage, beer baths and ironing.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Bright Lips For Spring

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

What is your favorite makeup trend for spring, and what products can women use to get that look? Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Dawn

Hey Dawn,

One of my favorite trends for spring is bright lips! As an artist, I personally would use brighter lip colors more often then I get to. I'm liking bright colors in pink and orange, but I prefer a sheer formula. Here are a couple of universally flattering shades by MAC: Lipstick in Lustering and Vegas Volt. Both colors are sheer and give a beautiful pop of color to the face.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

xo,
Mario

Pretty in Particulière

Peep my polish. This week's mani comes courtesy of Chanel. Le Vernis in Particulière (from the spring makeup collection) is a putty/mushroomy shade that resembles one of my all-time faves, OPI's You Don't Know Jacques.

While they appear almost identical in the bottle, the subtle differences become more obvious during application. First, Particulière is lighter than its OPI counterpart. It is also more brown than YDKJ, which is more gray. Finally, the Chanel formula is more opaque and creamier - so the coverage is better than OPI.

If taupe-y nail polishes are a once in a while kind of thing for you, there's no reason you need both. But if you're like me and can't get enough of an offbeat yet neutral nail, I would recommend picking this up - even if you already have YDKJ.

Spoiled Pretty BOY!

My boy! This is his profile. He's facing up.

Who would have thought that a girly girl like me would start off my brood with a boy? I did!

Since very early in my pregnancy, I predicted I would have a little boy...and turns out my motherly intuition was right. Mr. Spoiled Pretty and I are expecting Westley in mid-August. We are so excited, there aren't even words.

This is his face and part of his torso (notice the ribs). His face is kinda blurry because he loves to move.

When he gets older, I'm sure he'll be embarassed that I posted his first pics on a beauty blog, but I'm a proud mama and I couldn't wait to introduce you to my beautiful son.

CEW Announces 2010 Beauty Awards Finalists!

Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) has announced the Finalists for the 2010 CEW Beauty Awards, the industry’s highest honor. Now in its 16th year, the CEW Beauty Awards celebrate the most innovative products of the year. The Finalists were chosen from more than 550 products from nearly 300 top brands.

The CEW Beauty Awards are the only awards program where the Finalists are chosen exclusively by beauty insiders. The roster of Finalists, voted on by over 3500 professionals in the field, has become consumers’ most coveted shopping list. "Consumers know that all Finalist products have been field-tested and approved by CEW members. Year after year, these products are what consumers seek out to address their needs," says Carlotta Jacobson, President of CEW.

The CEW Board of Governors will now vote on the 155 Finalists to determine the winners across 31 categories. The winners will be announced at the CEW Beauty Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 21st, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Comedian and Actor Mario Cantone will emcee the event again this year.

Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Okay, I'm about to get honest…real honest. As a beauty expert, it pains me to admit this, but I just started using eye cream. I know, I know…31 is a little late to the crows feet prevention partay. But I'm lazy, and I'm especially bad at regularly applying skin care products – particularly ones that are preventative and don't yield immediate results. Besides, my parents are pushing 60 and they don't have wrinkles, so I've been betting on good genes.

But I recently discovered an eye cream that has made me change my ways. Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is amazing. Chock full of avocado, beta carotene and shea buttery goodness, it moisturizes the delicate eye area without migrating into eyes or irritating; even those with sensitive skin will love this product. It has a creamy, concentrated texture that skin just drinks up – so you need not worry about it sitting on top of skin or interfering with makeup application. All of the above benefits are fine and good, but here's what I love about the eye cream: when you rub it in, it releases a cool burst of water. It's so cool…if Bill Nye The Science Guy did a beauty segment on his show, this would totally be one of the products he'd highlight.

Every time I apply Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado, I look forward to that slight splash of water. It never gets old for me, and that's what keeps me applying every day. So despite my laziness, I'm using my love of gimmicks to help me beat crow's feet.

I can't believe my eye cream. It's fantabulous...and you're gonna love it too!

Make Up For Ever HD Blush: Buy This NOW!

Make Up For Ever’s new HD Blush is one of the best blushes I’ve ever tried - and you know that, when it comes to makeup, I get around.

I am absolutely enamored with MUFE’s HD Foundation, so when I heard about the new blush, it went straight to the top of my makeup must haves list. And lemme tell you, it does not disappoint. First of all, it is very pigmented, which means a little goes a long way…but not so crazy bold that you end up looking like Bozette the Clown. I also love its creamy texture, which is ideal for the warmer weather that is upon us. Another plus of the cream consistency? No need for a makeup brush…all you need is your fingers. But if you want a really professional look, the beautyblender sponge applies like a dream.

The real reason to love HD Blush is the fact that it looks, well, real. Even up close, it appears as if you’re actually blushing – not wearing something to mimic a radiant glow. It blends seamlessly and lasts all day (and night). Oh, and did I mention that it comes in 14 amazing shades? Make Up For Ever sent me samples of #4 (Walk of Shame) and #6 (Quickie) and I love them both. I wear the first when I’m going for a cool toned makeup look, and it looks amazing; when I’m going in a warmer direction, I wear the latter. Though these are the only shades I’ve tried, I can imagine that most of the colors would be universally flattering because they apply so fantastically well and can be layered for intensity.

The only unfortunate thing about this product is that, for now, it’s playing hard to get. I’ve visited two local Sephora stores and, to my dismay, the MUFE display does not yet include the HD Blushes. For the time being, you can purchase on sephora.com (and, luckily, the swatches on the Sephora website are pretty accurate).

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Five Must Have Makeup Brushes

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hello Mario,

Being able to ask you a beauty question is such a treat because I'm such a fan of your work. My question is this: I’m in the market for some new makeup brushes and I’m wondering which you recommend. I'm not looking for brush set suggestions – I'm more looking for awesome brushes to round out my collection. Please help!

Thank you,
Mariah

Hey Mariah,

Makeup brushes are so important to me and I use tons of them! Here are some of my favorite brushes that I've been using for years: Stila #15 Double-Sided Crease and Liner Brush; I use the smaller side for a detailed crease. Stila #24 Double-Sided Illuminating Powder Brush is great to contour the cheeks and frame the face with bronzer. I also like Make Up For Ever's Eyebrow Brush. The Concealer Brush by Benefit Cosmetics is great for working under the eyes and my favorite Retractable Lip Brush is by Billy B Beauty.

Hope you get to try some of these brushes to round out your collection! Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Mario

Hanae Mori Butterfly Solid Perfume Ring

It's no secret that Hanae Mori Butterfly is one of my favorite fragrances. In fact, two different versions of this scent occupy permanent residency on my perfume vanity. So when I heard about a new Hanae Mori Butterfly Solid Perfume Ring available at Sephora, I started reaching for my Visa...that is, until I actually saw it.

I love the idea of a solid perfume ring, but this one just looks so uninspired and cheap that the $39 price tag is laughable. For that kind of cash, I would suggest bypassing the .019 oz ring and buying the 5 oz body lotion instead.

For such a sophisticated scent, I'm a little shocked that they would put it in such a bauble that looks like it came out of a Cracker Jack box. Packaging fail.

Interview With François Nars

NARS is one of my all-time favorite brands – and if you’re a lover of makeup, it's probably high on your list too. Whenever I visit Sephora, I never do a lap before committing to a location. My first stop is always the NARS counter.

I'll never forget the time when my sister and I were shopping at the local mall and she started to get cranky; I'm a shopper of Olympic proportions, whereas she starts to tire after just a few hours. So when we stopped by Sephora, I bought her NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Rated R and it calmed her right down. That's the power of NARS, people.

Recently, my girl Amber scored an exclusive interview with the legendary François Nars. Did you know that his most-used makeup item is NARS Cosmetics Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey – which just so happens to be celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic's go-to nude lipstick?

For more dishy deets on François Nars, like how he creates a smoky eye and the inspiration behind the Schiap lipstick and nail polish shade, visit dailymakeover.com.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Your Perfect Nude Lip

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

If you're reading this, it means that you chose my question – which is so exciting!!! I am a big fan and am awed by your talent. I've been reading your column on Spoiled Pretty since it started, and have really improved as an amateur makeup artist. So thanks! Anyway, here is my question – I love the nude lip look, but I never know how to pull it off. How do I find my right shade of nude, and do you have any tools/techniques for pulling off the look? And can you recommend some of you all-time favorite nude lipsticks/glosses?

Your biggest fan,
Kirstie

Hey Kirstie,

Let me start out by saying that you're very sweet!

When choosing nude shades for your lips, you should keep a couple things in mind: light pinks look better on fare skin because they will most likely have too much white in them for darker complexions. Peachy/beige nudes look great on medium to darker skin tones because of the yellow pigments in them.

If your lips are naturally red or dark, pat some foundation on your lips first to block out the color so that the true lipstick shade shows. My fave nudes are Honolulu Honey Lipstick by NARS and Josie Maran Plumping Lip Gloss in Optimism.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

xo,
Mario

RealBeauty.com Clip-In Extensions Feature

Gillette Venus Spa Breeze Giveaway!

When I meet a beauty product that blows my mind, there are – typically – two things that come to mind. First, I ask myself, "Self, how have you lived your life thus far without this product in your possession?" Secondly, I strategize, "How can I hook up my Spoiled Pretty peeps?"

This was exactly my thought process when I tried Venus Spa Breeze for the very first time, last week.

This new Venus incarnation has built-in shave gel bars infused with the clean, fresh scent of white tea to provide a light lather as you shave, eliminating the need for a separate shave cream. I have to admit that, as a fan of the Schick Intuition razor, I wasn’t immediately impressed when I saw Venus Spa Breeze's tiny little 'shave gel bars.' My pregnancy hormones have sent my hair follicles into overdrive, and I was very skeptical that there was enough gel to handle one leg – let alone all of my hairy situations.

But the Venus Spa Breeze pleasantly surprised me. First of all, I'm going to go on record as saying that my armpits have never been so bald, smooth and moisturized, post-shave, than after using the Venus Spa Breeze. And the razor delivered such a close shave that I didn't have any stubble the next day! Lastly, the shave gel bars that I originally dismissed just kept going…and going…and going. They lasted through many a shave session and the triple blades stayed razor sharp.

I'm so impressed with Gillette that I'm partnering with them for a giveaway! Ten lucky winners will receive the Venus Spa Breeze, which includes 1 Venus Spa Breeze Razor, 2 refill cartridges, and 1 Shaving Compact. With warmer weather almost upon us, think how much this razor will come in handy. No more fussing with shaving cream…no more rust rings on the side of your tub…and no more buying those stupid mini cans of shave gel for vacations. Venus Spa Breeze is all you need.

To enter the giveaway, leave a message in the comments section; make sure to leave your email or another way for me to get in touch, just in case you get lucky. Contest is open to U.S. residents only. The giveaway ends at noon (EST) on Monday, March 22, 2010. Good luck!

Flora by Gucci Eau de Parfum

Flora by Gucci Eau de Parfum, which follows the debut of the Flora by Gucci Eau de Toilette, is the latest product developed for the growing Flora fragrance world. The light, feminine touch of Flora resonated immediately with consumers around the world when it launched in April 2009. This new EDP possesses the same youthful and optimistic spirit but in a deeper, more concentrated scent. The result is a sophisticated, warmer version of Flora that makes it ideal as an evening fragrance.

"I was just as involved in the creative development of this new Eau de Parfum as I was in the original Flora fragrance," says Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini. "I used the freshness of Flora as the foundation but wanted to bring a new sensuality to this scent. The Eau de Parfum feels a bit more grown up. I think it will still appeal to our Flora customer but now she has the choice of whether she wants to keep her scent light and easy or a bit more rich and dramatic for evening. It is for a different moment in the same woman's life."

Giannini relied upon the same base of Rose and Osmanthus flower balanced by Sandalwood and Patchouli for the scent's structure; however the notes are now stronger and more sultry in the Eau de Parfum version. Top notes of fresh citrus and peony finish off the bouquet. Not only is the effect more intense and luxurious, but the scent also lasts longer on the skin.

For the EDP, Giannini has created a new white on black Flora pattern for the package interior, which gives a twist to the original and creates a new, richer look. The bottle's cap has been crafted from gold metal and the label in gold paper give it a precious and luxurious feel.

The new Eau de Parfum will be complemented by a special collection of luxury gifts that will launch in exclusive doors. The new products include a white scented candle decorated with the black Flora pattern, a luxury purse spray as well as a solid fragrance that is packaged in a sophisticated gold metal compact.

The collection:

Eau de Parfum (1 oz), $60.00
Eau de Parfum (1.6 oz), $80.00
Eau de Parfum (2.5 oz), $100.00

Flora by Gucci Eau de Parfum is available at Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue stores nationwide.

Joan Jett's Hairstylist's Tips On How To Get A Shag

Joan Jett's hairstylist, Sally Hershberger, shares tips on how to get a shag.

What is a shag?
SH: "A shag is really any layered cut. From longer pieces like Gisele, to something choppier like Joan's hair."

Why is it so popular?
SH: It's a very versatile style that can work with many different hair types."

What do you ask your stylist for if you want a shag?
SH: "If you want to take the look in a more severe direction, ask for a shorter style that has lots of layers of all lengths for a choppy, rockstar look. A more subtle version would be something a little less drastic - longer, softer layers."

How do you style a shag?
SH: "The key to a great shag is using the right products. Most women have layers in their hair but, until my Shagg line, there was never a line of products designed to define and enhance their layers. To really make the most of layers, use lightweight, residue-free formulas so your layers aren't weighed down."

Sally's styling tips:
1) First, rough, dry hair.
2) Use Sally's Shagg Spray on dry hair and blast with a blow dryer.
3) Shape with your hands, which is much easier than using a brush to create texture and pieciness, for a great messy, sexy look in seconds.
4) To refresh the look, give the style a few quick additional spritzes.
5) Further define your layers with a gel. Sally uses her Shagg Rocks Liquid Gel to create further separation. Just pull a little through the hair using your hands.

The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, hits theaters on March 19.
