Reunited And It Smells So Good: Michel Germain Deauville

Ten years ago, in a perfume shop in the Bahamas, my father and I fell in love with the same fragrance - Deauville pour Homme by Michel Germain. We were smitten at first scent, but the price tag seemed a little inflated. So when we re-boarded our cruise ship, we searched the duty free store. No luck. When we returned to Philadelphia, my dad left no department store unturned - but he always left empty-handed.

Apparently, the Bahamian saleswoman hadn’t exaggerated Deauville’s hard-to-find status. So Dad and I cursed our inner bargain hunters, until he discovered Deauville during a routine trip to Bloomingdale’s a year later. Dad snatched it up, not caring how much it cost. I, on the other hand, was a poor college student. I barely had the funds to keep my gas tank filled, so I hit up my typically generous mom for a loan. She refused, not understanding why a 21-year-old girl would want to wear men’s cologne. So I was forced to satisfy my Deauville cravings by stealing a spritz from my dad when I happened to be home from school.

For the past nine years, a bottle of Deauville has been perched atop my dad’s dresser. You’d be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of the fragrance than Papa Spoiled Pretty. And while I have always had a soft spot for the crisp clementine, spicy white pepper, French white thyme, pipe tobacco and amber oak moss notes - over the years, Deauville sorta regressed to the recesses of my mind. Until a few weeks ago, that is.

While bargain hunting at TJ Maxx with Mama Spoiled Pretty, I spotted several bottles of Deauville pour Homme on a display right by the registers. You know, the shelves full of goodies that beckon to you - their siren song impossible to ignore? Anyway, I picked up the Deauville box, examined the familiar packaging, and the price tag said…$9.99! Does it get any better?

Since then, Deauville has been perched atop my dresser (like dad, like Daneen). Mr. Spoiled Pretty is a little weirded out by my affinity for men’s cologne (he calls it "nasty"), so I was excited to learn that Deauville pour Homme has a lady counterpart, Deauville French Spa. I’m not sure how French Spa’s Italian Bergamot, black currant, gardenia, lotus, white wood and musky notes relate to the cologne, but I’m eager to find out.

Listen Up, My Little Chocoholics...

Listen up, my little chocoholics...

New to Starbucks' beverage lineup: the Espresso Truffle Latte. They've combined Starbucks espresso with the premium European-style cocoa blend used in their Signature Hot Chocolate and steamed milk, and topped it with whipped cream and a touch of chocolate powder.

It's like your taste buds died and went to cocoa-covered heaven!

And if you're one of those folks who lives at Starbucks (are you made of money?), here's a tasty tidbit for ya…get the new Starbucks Gold Card – and for an annual membership fee of $25, you'll enjoy the following perks:

* 10% off most purchases in participating U.S. Starbucks stores
* A free drink when you purchase your membership in-store
* A free beverage on your birthday
* Exclusive offers and discounts throughout the year
* Free Wi-Fi access (for up to 2 hours) each day in participatingStarbucks stores

Can I Have Some Remedy? Remedy For Me Please.

When your skin is parched, you quench its thirst by slathering on a thick, hydrating lotion/balm. So when your strands miss moisture like the deserts miss the rain, the same logic applies. Give your thin, runny shampoo and conditioner a rest…and invest in concentrated products that pamper your stressed tresses.

Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner are staples in my shower for this very reason. The shampoo is so thick that when I squeeze it out of the tube, I always double check the label because I swear it was the conditioner. Dry Remedy is one of the few shampoos I’ve tried that delivers immediate results; when it comes to beauty products, I’m all Paula Cole “I don’t want to wait” – so instant gratification is a huge plus for me. Even before I apply the conditioner, my hair already feels softer and healthier. And the scent is amazing…when you’re done, your bathroom will smell like a spa (think ylang ylang and rose geranium, plus a hint of vanilla).

The conditioner is equally restorative. Personally, I mix equal parts of the Dry Remedy Moisturizing Conditioner with Barry Fletcher Moisture Therapy Cool Revitalizing Conditioner – it’s my hair’s cocktail of choice.

At $24 a pop, these products aren’t for the budget conscious. So if you don’t have $48 to spend, but your dry hair is crying out for help, I recommend Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo. Purchase Aveda Dry Remedy at aveda.com, and take advantage of free shipping on all orders (now through 11/30) and choose a free sample!

L'Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Lip Conditioner Tastes Like You Bought It At GNC

I'm a big fan of L'Oreal (it doesn't get much better than HIP JellyBalm or Skin Genesis Daily Moisturizer Oil-Free Lotion), but I've got something to say about their Bare Naturale Gentle Lip Conditioner and it isn't pretty.

The preservative-free, fragrance-free lip soother is 96% natural and does a decent job of conditioning lips while adding a sheer tint to your pucker. But must it taste and smell like old-school Metamucil? For real, it tastes like some supplement that you'd buy at GNC.

Surely there's a way to add some fruit juices or bubblegum essence to this product without rendering it carcinogenic. Don't ask me how, I'm no scientist...just putting it out there. And it's $10! I don't know about you, but if I'm shelling out that much for .11 ounces of lip balm, I want some flava.

Olay Body Wash Plus Stage Five Clingers

A few months ago, Marie Claire named Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons as one of the '25 Beauty Products That Will Change Your Life.' I really enjoy Marie Claire and typically trust their reviews, but this was straight up hyperbole.

Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons isn't the worst body wash that I've ever tried, but it by no means changed my life. The creamy lather foams up nicely and feels silky on skin. The ocean-y fragrance is pleasant, and subtly lingers. But, unfortunately, the scent isn't the only thing that likes to stick around.

The microbeads don't dissolve, like you might expect them to. Rather, they cling to your skin...so when you're rinsing clean, you need to check (and double-check) yourself to make sure the blue beads aren't hiding anywhere. And be prepared for your shower/tub to look like Smurfette just got done exfoliating in there instead of you.

There are plenty of better body washes on the market, so I can't recommend this one. Even though it costs less than $6, I still expect to be impressed. Yes, Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons cleanses skin and gently buffs skin. But, then again, so does a bar of Dove soap and a washcloth...and this combo won't leave stage five clingers littering your shower floor.

90s Ladies Week: What's Up, Doc?

In the early to mid 1990s, Doc Martens were the nirvana of cool. And I, like many, fell under the spell of the chunky-soled boots with the distinctive yellow stitching. I begged my parents to buy me a pair of Doc Martens - or as my mother called them, "those ugly doctor shoes." But they refused, wondering why I would want to appear as if I was moonlighting as a construction worker. Eventually, I forgave my parents for depriving me of Doc Martens - once I realized how truly ridiculous I would have looked tromping around in them. Then ironically, in the late 90s, my mom bought me a pair of Doc Marten sandals she found on sale at Daffy's. So I did eventually become cool - just, like, four years too late.

It's 2008 now, and I've got heart palpitations over another doctor. While rooting around on my mom's vanity a few weeks ago, I discovered an unopened jar of Dr. Brandt's Microdermabrasion For Face. When I asked where and when she bought it, she couldn't remember. Who does that? Who randomly buys beauty products then forgets about them? Unbelievable. I mean, sometimes I wonder how this woman and I can possibly be related. Anyway, so I asked politely to sample and she obliged. What happened next was a thing of myth.

The pharmaceutical grade crystals polished away all of my dead skin cells, leaving behind the softest, most radiant skin I've seen in forever ever. And it literally took two minutes. I couldn't believe it. I emerged from the bathroom with an enormous grin, feeling up my face - incredulous that it could be so smooth. I urged my mom to touch my cheek and she was beyond impressed too.

I asked to take it off her hands...but after seeing the results, there was no way she was letting me leave her house with Dr. Brandt in tow.

Can you believe it? The woman who is the main beneficiary of my beauty beneficence doesn't want to share. But she did give me life, and a pair of Doc Marten sandals (albeit four years late), so I guess I'll just have to go out and get my own.

Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion For Face is available at Sephora and drbrandtskincare.com.

Well, that concludes 90s Ladies Week. I hope you had as much fun reading as I did writing. And be sure to visit Amber at Beauty Blogging Junkie and check out her final installment.

Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Giveaway!!!

You didn’t think that this week would end without a giveaway, did you? Tsk, tsk…you should know better than that. My main thrill in life is a giveaway. It gives me a sense of control in a world full of chaos.

So this week, Spoiled Pretty has joined forces with Sally Hansen for a fashion-forward, trend-setting giveaway. Two winners will receive Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Fall 2008 Color Collection, an anthology of 10 stylish shades that compliment Reese’s nature-inspired Fall 2008 collection.

According to Tracy Reese, customers "aren’t afraid to be noticed." I think the same can be said of the women who wear this nail polish collection, which marks the fifth collaboration between the designer and Sally Hansen. The colors are luxurious and rich, yet understated and refined.

Shades include: Raven's Wing* (black with silver glitter), Moonstone (silver pearl metallic), Quartz Chameleon (pinky-nude with shimmer), Divinity* (pale toffee with shimmer), The Good Earth* (deep dark chocolate with shimmer), Cruel Heart (scarlet with shimmer), Alchemy* (dark grape with shimmer), Torrid Bloom* (deep fuchsia crème), Night Lily (plummy crème) and Stormy Blue (smoky silver/blue metallic).

The Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer Fall 2008 Collection (only $6 each!) is available at drugstores and mass market retailers nationwide. Though I know you’re tempted to run out right now and buy up every single shade, why not try your luck first and enter the giveaway?

To enter, send an email to spoiledprettycontests@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name and mailing address. The subject line should read "Sally Hansen/Tracy Reese Giveaway." The contest ends at midnight (EST) on Thursday, November 27th. Two winners will be chosen at random from among the entrants. On Friday, November 28th, I'll announce the winners' names. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. and Canadian residents only.

Good luck!

90s Ladies Week: Bright Eyed And Bushy-Tailed, Like Furby!

In the late 90s, my parents were among the 40 million people duped into buying Furby – a demonic-looking, furry robot troll that spoke its own language and antagonized children around the globe. You see, Furby loved to play…probably more than its adolescent owners. Furby didn’t care if my little sister had homework, had a headache or needed to sleep. Furby never tired of talking and would rarely hold its Furbish tongue. And in a matter of days, my sister’s favorite toy became the bane of her existence.

Furby didn’t have an off switch - so everytime she moved it, got close to it, or made a sound, Furby sprang to life...begging for attention. After a few frustrating weeks, my cranky and sleep-deprived sister decided to perform surgery on Furby. She fished my Dad’s screwdriver out of the toolbox and began to operate. Lauren loosened the screws hidden in Furby’s matted coat and removed the batteries. That was the end of Furby (R.I.P., little fella), and of my sister’s sleepless nights.

Following Furby's passing, my sister recovered in record time. Her irritable behavior was replaced by her normal cheery disposition. And after just a day or so, the darkness under her eyes receded. But that’s the beauty of 11-year-olds. They’re resilient little suckers.

At my age, it takes a little more to bounce back. For me to look bright eyed and bushy tailed in the AM, I need two things: Chanel Sublimage Eye Essential Regenerating Eye Cream and Branche Charmeuse Case.

Sublimage is an undereye cure-all, simultaneously targeting wrinkles, fine lines, bags, dryness and dark circles. The cream has a luminous quality that cancels out shadows, so you can also wear it during the day – in lieu of concealers – to appear awake and refreshed (even if you’re anything but).

The Charmeuse Case is made of 100% silk and does so much more than merely protect your pillow. It prevents wrinkles by minimizing facial creases, extends the life of your hairstyle (no more tedious and damaging daily styling because sleeping on silk gives your hair more volume and shine), eliminates unnecessary hair loss or breakage and induces a deeper more restful sleep.

Chanel Sublimage Eye Essential Regenerating Eye Cream is available at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom. Branche Charmeuse Case is sold at beautyhabit.com, shopintuition.com and bigelowchemists.com. To adopt a Furby, click here…though I don’t know why you would want to.

Which toy inspired Amber’s 90s beauty review? Visit Beauty Blogging Junkie to find out. And be sure to visit Spoiled Pretty tomorrow for the final installment of 90s Ladies Week.

Sephora Mistletoe Makeover

I've spent the past hour messing around with Sephora's Mistletoe Makeover, an adorable e-card that lets you virtually experiment with holiday makeup trends and share with friends.

Just upload your photo and choose from four holiday looks – “Smokey Sugar Plum,” “Merry Berry,” “Santa’s Little Temptress” and “O, Tannen Babe.” It even shows you which products you need to recreate your virtual look in the real world.

The perfectionist in me was finally pleased with my fifth attempt. And the cornball in me spent almost 45 minutes rocking out to Sephora's techno version of "Auld Lang Syne."

And after your makeover is over, Sephora gives you a promo code - WINKORKISS - to redeem a free lipstick sample or lashes with any purchase at sephora.com.

90s Ladies Week: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, A Licky Boom Boom Down

I’ve got snow on the brain. Not just because it’s flipping freezing in Philly, but because it’s 90s Ladies Week and today’s review is inspired by Snow. You know, the marble-mouthed Canadian reggae rapper (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) who took the world by storm with his story of snitchin’.

The fact that Informer hit #1, stayed there for seven consecutive weeks, and holds the world record as the best selling reggae single in U.S. history says a lot about the decade.

But that was 1993. It’s 2008, ladies…so when the weather outside gets frightful and you’re looking for something delightful, don’t head to the used record store in search of 12 Inches of Snow. What an awful title, right? Instead, head to your local Sephora and pick up 8.5 ounces of Snow Wonder Body Butter by Bliss.

This limited edition lotion is hella hydrating, as we’ve come to expect from Bliss moisturizers. The crisp and refreshing fragrance is reminiscent of freshly fallen snow – and leaves behind a subtle shimmer. While you’re in the shower, submerge the tube in a sink full of warm water. It’ll smooth on like butta and feels so warm and comforting as it is absorbed into your skin.

90s Ladies Week: Clueless About Foundation? As If!

For the second installment of 90s Ladies Week, I draw inspiration from one of my most beloved movies. A modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, starring one Alicia Silverstone. Maybe you’ve heard of it. Yes, I’m talking about Clueless - the movie that defined a generation and introduced my sixteen-year-old self to the genius of Azzedine Alaia, the ever adorable Paul Rudd, and a host of notable quotables that remain on the tip of my tongue thirteen years later. Does this convo ring any bells?

Tai: Do you think she's pretty?
Cher: No, she's a full-on Monet.
Tai: What's a Monet?
Cher: It's like the painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess.

Don’t be a Monet like Cher’s nemesis, Amber (not to be confused with my bestie, Amber – who’s a total Betty). My new favorite foundation, Make Up For Ever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation ensures that you look flawless – in any light, from far away, up close and even in High Definition. The oil-free, medium-to-full-coverage formula creates a soft-focus effect that softens lines and blurrs imperfections. Available in 25 shades to match all skintones. My color is #173, coincidentally named Amber.

On Friday, while having dinner with Señor Spoiled Pretty, he couldn’t stop commenting on how perfectly luminous my skin looked. I’m paraphrasing, of course – but this was a big deal, as Graham hardly comments on my makeup. Thanks to my hubby’s ringing endorsement, HD Invisible Cover has become my foundation of choice. Hopefully, moving forward, his compliments won’t be so sporadic*.

Make Up Forever is available at Sephora.

The Buzz in Home Fragrance: Nest Candles

Nest Beeswax & Whipped Cream Scented Candle is the bees knees.

Light the wick and take a whiff…beeswax accord, essence of whipped cream, steamed rice, honey and cognac unite to lace your space with a warm and exotic perfume that defies description. This surprising marriage of fragrances is a breath of fresh air and a welcome alternative to the generic 'holiday' home fragrances that seem to be popping up on every shelf this time of year.

At $32, the 8 ounce candle costs a pretty penny. But it smells divine and burns for 50+ hours, so you can consider it money well-spent. If the price seems a somewhat steep, drop hints to your honey. On the other hand, if you've got cash to burn - take my advice and pick up a colony of these candles!

Nest Candles are available at Neiman Marcus.

90s Ladies Week: Saved By The Gel

It’s that time again. Time for me and my partner in crime, Amber, to bring you another week of beauty reviews inspired by pop culture of yesteryear. Remember how rad 80s Ladies Week was? Well, hold onto your butts…it’s time to slip on that flannel shirt, lace up your Doc Martens, and break out your Game Boy...it’s 90s Ladies Week, y’all.

First on the menu: a product inspired by my love for Peter Engel’s pièce de résistance – Saved By The Bell. In the early 90s, it was a rare Saturday morning that I was NOT catching up with my friends at Bayside High.

Like most Gen Xers, Saved By The Bell trivia hides in the recesses of my brain. Remember when Kelly’s face turned purple after using a zit cream given to her by Zack (and right before the homecoming dance, natch)? How much did the young feminist in you cringe every time Slater referred to Jessie as mama? 'Member how bad you felt for Lisa that she never had a real boyfriend and always had to settle for geeky ole Screech? I was like, "Peter Engel, help a sista out!" And don’t get me started on Jessie’s addiction to caffeine pills. Homegirl was this close to turning tricks for some Vivarin.

Don’t play coy and pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. But here’s one factoid you probably didn’t know: Mark-Paul Gosselaar had to dye his hair blonde every two weeks while shooting the show. Say what?!?! Talk about blonde ambition.

My man Mark-Paul was in serious need of Ken Paves Boost Up Color Drops, which enhance existing hair color or boost fading color when added to conditioner or styling products. The Boost Up Color Drops can also change the hue of your color and even add the effect of highlights. They’re ideal for refreshing color in between visits to the salon - and the drops are formulated with soy proteins, conditioners and humectants which add strength, moisture and UV protection.

I add a few squirts of Boost Up Color Drops in Honey to leave-in conditioner and apply to my towel-dried hair. And after I blow-dry, I add a few drops to my shine serum to kick it up a notch. Honey adds warmth to my dark brown hair and leaves my prehistoric highlights looking much less brassy.

I imagine that if MPG would have gotten his hands on Boost Up Color Drops in the early 90s, he would have mixed a few drops with his favorite LA Looks product. Mark-Paul would have been, literally, saved by the gel.

Ken Paves Boost Up Color Drops are available in Black, Brown, Platinum, Honey, Beige and Red shades ($40) and are available at Henri Bendel, HSN, Ulta and Beauty.com.
